I love learning from my grand children, Noni 9 years old, Gerald 6, Indira 6, and Bintang 2.5 years old. I like to watch and listen them playing, moving, singing, and shouting. They never feel tired. They have a great source of energy, which makes our life cheerful.
They also have great creativity. They are always able to find anything to play with. Old shoes, cans, slippers, paper, chairs, table clothes, anything. We often lough out loud when we listen to their conversations or their answers to our questions. Because the answers are unpredictable, very creative, genuine, out of the box.
They have a great adaptation. They are adaptive. In their new environment they can find somethings that interest them quickly. They can learn local languages fast.
They have a wealthy source of forgiveness. Sometimes they quarrel and cry. They quarrel seriously. Yet in a few minutes they start to play together again with full forgiveness, with new understanding.
They have their own characters. I can see their characters in their paintings and drawings. Noni and Indira are thoughtful, whilst Gerald is spontaneous. I restrain from interfearing their characters, so that they can grow with their own characters.
They can enjoy this moment very well. This must be their secret of having so much energy. Because they are present. They concentrate their mind on whatever in front of them. Because of their being presence, they are always connected to The Universe, they are very happy, energetics, and creative.
They have courage to try something new. They have courage to face failure.
What great teachers the children are. They are receptive to the continuous guidance from The Universe. Yet, we need to have open mind and hearts in order to receive their teachings.
May everyone be happy and healthy.
Love, suhirman.

AWARENESS for SUCCESS LIFE
My sisters and brothers,
I would like to share my happiness which I absorbed from the mind, the feelings, the ideas of the participants, as well as the serenity and the beauty of the hill and landscape of training ground where I conducted an Awareness Training for Dojo Pelangi last weekend. I lead, and I gave materials for the training, yet at the same time I learnt a lot from them. I do not position my self as a teacher or a guru, but as a learner; at the same level as them.
I love giving the techniques of developing our awareness, which is the foundation of our success, the foundation of our happiness. We learnt together that The Universe gives us guidance at any moment; not at a certain time of the day, not in a certain time of the year, not in certain years in our life. At any time continuously. If we listen and follow the guidance, we certainly live under the guidance of the Universe to achieve our goals, live in a happy life.
I opened the training by meditation together. We sit around on the wooden floor and start meditating for ten minutes.
I mentioned to them that meditation is not a monopoly of a certain religion. This had to be mentioned early, because there has been quite a lot of prejudice that meditation is owned only by the bhudists. No, meditation is universal, it has been practiced by any religions. My meditation gurus are hindus, bhudists, and moslems. I also practice Sufi Meditation.
I mentioned to them why some human beings live unsuccessfully and unhappily. It is because they live without the guidance of the Universe. They rely on their neo cortex, their modern brains. They think that happiness lays outside their bodies, lays on the cute husbands or wifes, on beautiful and expensive cars and houses, on successful cariers. They are not aware that the source of happiness is within themselves. We can not get any happiness outside. We need to delve inward, into ourselves. And that is meditation.
Awareness that happiness lays inside ourselves, makes us understand how important meditation is for our life.
By practicing meditation we practice awareness of our breath, our bodies, our thoughts, our feelings, and our surroundings. We are aware of guidance from The Universe. We discussed and learnt that The Universe keeps guiding us toward happy life. Only people who have quiet mind can catch the guidance. That is why by quieting our minds we can improve our crativity to answer any challenges in our life.
Then we practiced looking at somethings without judgement. That means looking with quiet mind. Looking at something meditatively. With quiet mind our awareness expand, and so is our happiness and wisdom. We went out to look at anythings from running water, blooming flowers, to cloudy mountain for 30 minutes. It was done individually.
Looking at something without judgement is so important. We look at it without any prejudice. We look at it as what it is.
Then we went back to the living room to discuss and share what we felt when we practiced looking without judgement. Listening to our feeling is important because our feeling is one of the mediums that The Universe uses to guide us. The participants share their feelings, from no feeling to bliss or the ultimate feeling.
After lunch we practiced listening without judgement. We listened to someone. We practiced in pairs. One person tells her biography which could be shared with us. Listening without judgement is so important in leadership in a family and in companies. It helps us to make wise decisions. Life is actually a chain of decisions, and its quality depends on those decisions.
The next sessions were guided meditations to find our Dharmas in this life. Every one has a Dharma, which is the purpose of one’s life. This is a big question to answer. We can find it by meditation, by asking “What is the purpose of my life” to our inner self in a meditative condition. Without my guidance this practice would have taken too much time. That was why I guided their meditation with my voice to make them went into their delta state after 30 minutes or so. In their delta state, a very calm state, they waited for a sign or a voice which indicated their purposes of life.
With a guided meditation I also direct them toward cleaning their bodies from any negative energy which had accumulated in their bodies during their lives. The negative energy had made them worried, aggressive, anxious, fear, which hindered their happiness and success. With guided meditation their negative energy can be washed out by their positive energy, using their own minds.
I also lead them to practice the guided meditation to make the trainees to forgive themselves and anyone who had treated them badly that had hurt their hearts. I suggested them to forgive themselves first, and then their parents and others.
We followed each session with a discussion to share our experience, so that we can learn from our other participants.
We ended the training with loving kindness meditation.
May everyone be happy and healthy.
Love, suhirman.

SUCCESSFUL LIFE
When I train leadership, my training theme is success, since success is the dream of all of us. I am sure that success is also your dream. Financial success, social and political success, and physical success. You might have achieved the majority, or may be all, of your dream. You might have had a nice wife, wonderful children, a comfortable house and car, and a respectable job. With those achievements, you might feel happy. Or your friend might think you are a happy person.
The question is: are you really happy? Does success guarantee your happiness. Does success guarantee that your mind is free from anxiety, free from fear?
I remember Bertrand Russel in his book The Conquest of Happiness he discussed how many successful people are actually not very happy. Even many of them live in misserable unhappiness.
After practicing and studying aikido and meditation for many years, I begin to realize how important to differentiate happiness from delight. This is in conjunction with a question: “What is your purpose of life?”
You might have some goals in your life similar to mine. My main goal used to be to get the highest degree in education. I was so sure that the highest education meant a good job and a happy life. And I do achieve the goal. I got two M.Scs and a Ph.D. What did I feel when I got my M.Scs and Ph.D ? Does those degrees guarantees my happiness?
Because of that degrees I got a job in The Indonesian Institute of Sciences, one of the most outstanding institutions in Indonesia. Does that job makes me happy? I have to answer the questions objectively. When I got those degrees, I did feel happy, but only for a few minutes. Like a short time of tide wave, up and back to normal. Quietness and emptiness followed.
I recall, the feeling of a short tide wave followed by quietness and emptiness is a common feeling following my successes in my life. Successes in education, in work, in sport games, in family life. Was that feeling we call a happiness? I thought it had been so.
Lesson from my life is that achievement does not guarantee happiness. Although life achievements influence our happiness. What follows achievements is delight. And delight is not the same as happiness. We got some delight when we achieve our targets or goals in our life. But the achievements do not guarantee our happiness.
Eckhard Tolle mentions that our focus of attention guarantees our happiness. I did not feel happy when I achieved my Ph.D and other targets because my mind flew to the future or the past, my mind did not focus on the present moment. Indeed this the teaching of my aikido and my meditation trainings. That it is so important to focus our mind to the present moment all the time.
If our purpose of life is to enjoy some delights, we do not need to focus our mind on the present moment. Our mind may wondering around to make some plans, to work out some organizing, controlling and practicing our plan. We concentrate our energy to achieve more, to grab more and more. But if our purpose of life is happiness, certainly we need to focus our mind to the present moment. We need to live in the present moment all the time. We pay attention to our breath all the time wherever we are, whatever we do, when we are eating, reading, writing, driving, we focus our attention to the present moment by paying attention to our breath and our inner body.
After learning and practicing Aikido and Meditation for years, I begin to understand that success does not only mean the achievement of our goals, but the attainment of happiness. Whilst the other way of life might guaratees some delights, but not happiness, only meditative life, which focus our attention to the present moment, all the time, guarantees happiness.
May every body be happy.
